New Nepal

Last month Nepal has faced massive changes, as the country’s 240 year old kingdom  (the last Hindu Kingdom left in the world) became a republic.
On the 11th June, as the last king, Gyanendra stepped down; the whole country seemed to rejoice, as the monarchy hasn’t been popular in Nepal for many years. Crowds of people gathered on streets to openly celebrate the country’s new start. The king has now left the palace, which will be turned into a museum to commemorate Nepal’s  history and culture.

New Faces

This month saw several new children arrive at Aishworya. Between the end of April and the first week of May we had a total of 10 new children brought to us. They all have different stories, and we shall do our best to put their stories and photos onto our profiles and website.
Their names are: Nima, Seema, Dhrisha, Dolma, Amrit, Priti, Lai-young, Niraj and Bijay.
Some of the children were brought to us by the police, while two boys were brought in by a taxi driver who found them alone, and the YCL (Young Communist League) also found two girls alone and neglected and brought them to us. One of the boys who arrived (Kamal) stayed with us for only two days before he was able to describe the location of his uncle’s house, so the police took him to help locate his relatives.
We are unsure how long the other children will be staying with us for, as we are attempting to locate their relatives, if they have any. Some children may only be with us for a few days or weeks, while others may become permanent members of the Aishworya family.
We were initially uncertain as to whether we should register them at the school, as we don’t want them to fall behind in their education, but we also don’t want to pay for uniforms, shoes, school fees and books if the children will soon be leaving again.
However that problem has now been solved, as Nirmala our director spoke with the headmaster of the school (Shivapuri Higher Secondary School), and he very kindly agreed to allow these children to attend classes without officially enrolling at the school.
If they are still attending the school in two months’ time, when the first exams are scheduled, then we can enroll them and pay the admission fees so that they will be eligible to take their exams.
A friend of Nirmala’s provided some second-hand uniforms, and the new children have all quickly settled down into the school routine along with all the other children.
We are extremely happy with this arrangement, and are especially grateful to the Shivapuri school for being so understanding about this situation.
